The 2009 Xstrata Mount Isa Mining Expo showcases the latest technology and developments in the mining industry. Spanning three days in March, 144 exhibitors braved the heat to exhibit at the Expo which hit a record of 8000 visitors despite the economic and environmental climate.

The Mount Isa Mining Expo celebrated its 14th year and continues to be the largest annual Expo in Eastern Australia. The Carpentaria Minerals Province has long been known as a wealth of underground tracts of metal and minerals including: copper, gold, silver, zinc, phosphate, lead, cobalt, nickel, tin, gypsum, opals, silica, granite, vanadium, uranium, and more recently a large deposit of molybdenum and rhenium. This is further emphasised by the sheer volume of material shipped from the Port of Townsville from this area, reaching figures of over 7 billion dollars in 2007. Expectations are further increased by the recent announcements of Legend International and Ivanhoe Australia.

Showcased at Buchanan Park and the Xstrata Entertainment Pavilion, the 2009 Expo generated over a million dollars of revenue for the city of Mount Isa across one week and produced thousands of contacts for the Exhibitors. While the main focus is on conducting and creating business opportunities, the Chamber and the sponsors understand the necessity to educate the public and provide learning tools for students and residents of the town. To this end, the Mount Isa Mining Expo prides itself on the level of service, information and personal attention given to each exhibitor and visitor alike. Meet the Buyer Sessions provide exhibitors with a twenty minute one on one point of contact with purchasing officers from BHP Billiton, Oz Minerals and Xstrata Zinc and Xstrata Copper. Xstrata Mount Isa Mines conducted several learning centres which provided health and safety lessons, a tent filled with historical data and photographs from the earliest incarnation of Mount Isa Mines, and fun activities for families. The Xstrata Mount Isa Mining Expo offers a variety of events to allow for networking and opportunities which make it unique when compared to other Exhibitions around Australia.
